An empire by the sea…

Sandcastle.jpgIn 1890 the Kendal Bank of Messrs Wakefield Crewdson, commences work on this fabulous miniature palace in Morecambe. It is completed in time to be handed over to the Bank of Liverpool which absorbs the Kendal Bank in 1893! Too fabulous for words, this amazing piece of architecture survives as a bank to this day, the proud Liver Bird of the Bank of Liverpool still watching proceedings from just above the main door…

There has always been a certain – shall we say – rivalry between the neighbouring towns of Lancaster and Morecambe.  To those not from the area, it would seem that they could easily be separated by miles, whereas years of conurbation mean they are now practically joined at the hip.   Morecambe’s extremely long awaited re-generation has been exceptionally slow but very welcome. It will be “great when it’s finished” and with tourists keen to be photographed next to the statue of Eric Morecambe, and the Winter Gardens Theatre regularly packed-out with TV ghost-hunters, the town underwent a mini renaissance in the early 2000s. Martins’ presence in this little empire by the sea comprises four completely different branches, in four completely different parts of town. Hub of the Empire: 17 and 19 Euston Road in its full glory, looking more like a fairytale palace from eastern Europe than a bank.  Morecambe Branch, along with its sub branches survives the merger.

OLD MORECAMBE THAT IS NOW GONE FOREVER

Under Barclays – and despite some resistance from staff -  Morecambe eventually becomes a sub branch to Lancaster under the policy of creating ‘hubs’ – many smaller branches being controlled by one large branch. This is indeed a sad day for those who once thought Morecambe ‘untouchable’. Morecambe is one of the larger Northern District Branches, for which Barclays does not have better premises of its own.  The Branch on Cheapside is therefore closed, in favour of the Martins Branch at Euston Road, early in 1971 along with a Barclays sub-Branch at Alexandra Road.  In modern times, when banks are forever “downsizing”, this policy might seem strange, but at the time of Barclays’ takeover of Martins, all branch banks were expanding both their networks, and the size of their premises.  Progress marches on, and Cheapside, the birthplace of Dame Thora Hird is bulldozed to provide an Arndale Shopping Centre.

This lovely old image shows that whilst Barclays Branch at Cheapside could not match the grandeur or the space of the Martins Branch at Euston Road, it did have an appeal of its own, and once again that important corner aspect favoured by Banks who gained prominence in two streets at once…

Our thanks to Sarah Simpson, Manager of Barclays in Morecambe, for this contemporary view of Euston Road Branch on a very sunny day in 2016. It’s a sad reminder of the present day that an anti ram-raid device is necessary at the front door…
