 The Northumbrian Witch Trials may have uncovered some very spooky
goings on in Morpeth in the seventeenth century, but we feel sure that no
witch would ever work for Martins Bank, as their mischief could ruin
promising careers, and after all the Bank’s remit is to go to extremes to be helpful! The Alnwick and County Bank opens its
Branch at Morpeth some time before it becomes one of a small number of
offices to be swallowed in 1875 by the North Eastern Banking Company. Some 90 years later, and with Morpeth now
in the hands of Martins Bank, we find Branch Manager Mr Crinson being seen
off into his retirement in style by his friends and colleagues from Morpeth
branch and beyond…
after balance
work had been completed on June 30 Mr Crinson, retiring as Manager of
Morpeth branch, entertained his staff to a champagne buffet.

 On
behalf of subscribers Mr C. W. Norman, presenting Mr Crinson with a gas
table lighter and silver cigarette box, said how happy the staff had been
to serve under him and wished him a long and happy retirement. In reply Mr
Crinson thanked the staff for their support and offered them his good
wishes for the future. Unfortunately
Mrs Crinson was unable to be at the ceremony, but a bouquet was taken to
her at home by Miss Henderson. The day
before Mr Crinson's retirement Mr Weatherill had called at the branch to
wish him well. His career began at
Easington Colliery branch in 1923 and he served at North Eastern branches
throughout, being appointed Manager at Morpeth in 1960. The years 1939-45
were spent in H.M. Forces.
