From the M6 motorway – most of which isn’t built until after Martins’ disappears from our high streets – you might be forgiven for thinking as you pass the village of Tebay, that it is nothing more than a long row of terraced houses, and railway line, against a backdrop of stunning but somewhat bleak views. One bright spot, is the great tradition of “front room” banking, which is carried on beautifully by Martins Bank’s little sub-Branch there, in the wilds above Kendal.  The Lake District is dotted with such branches, representative of the banking companies that were consumed by the mergers and acquisitions that led to the modern-day Martins Bank. More importantly, they demonstrate also the need for banking in remote communities at a time when the internet isn’t even science fiction!  Our smaller image from 1969, depicts the sad demise of Tebay sub Branch in the form of a gloomy sign attached to the downpipe in view of those lovely rain-worn stone shapes peculiar to Westmorland – change is coming, and your days are numbered…
