The Mercantile Bank of Lancashire  opens a branch at 7 Derby Street Leek, between September and November 1899. Two amalgamations bring the branch into the hands of Martins Bank Limited in 1928, and Martins trades from here until - even with the merger pending - 1969, it was felt that newer, more commodious premises would be appropriate to meet the needs of the Bank’s growing business in this Staffordshire town.

This Leek Branch cheque - from the collection of Stephen Walker - was printed in June 1951. It bears the NATIONAL NUMBER for Leek Branch, 11-431. By the early 1960s the advent of READER/SORTER technology, sees British banks adopting the six-digit sorting sode numbers that are still in use today.
