Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank

With the amalgamation of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank and the Bank of Liverpool and Martins comes a comprehensive list of Manchester Branches.    Undoubtedly there is some “overlap” and adjustments are made to keep a good customer base without the extra expense of covering the same area twice.  However, the case of Cheetham Hill Road is a little different.  So, from 1928, Martins Bank finds itself propietor of THREE Branches in Cheetham Hill Road: - Nos 25, 87 and 209a. The Second World War sees the Bank’s Branches either run by the amazing army of women clerks in charge featured in our MARTINS AT WAR pages, or mothballed for the duration of hostilities as staff simply cannot be found or spared.  A few of these branches will not be opened again after the war. Amongst their number is No 87 Cheetham Hill Road (pictured here courtesy of W N Townson Bequest) and the branch is closed on 4 December 1941.  There seem to be a few anomalies where No 87 Cheetham Hill Road is concerned. The first you will gather from looking at the staff gallery below.  A manager AND a Clerk in Charge are both listed in Martins Bank Magazine, and their roles appear to have overlapped for several years!

In Service: Pre 1922 until 4 December 1941

We have also been unable to trace any Monday to Friday opening hours for the branch, although local directories of the time do list some Saturday hours. Also, No 87 Cheetham Hill Road is actually known in its Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank days as Cheetham Branch, whereas under Martins Bank that title has passed to No 25 Cheetham Hill Road…
