Craven Bank

Sep 1.jpg

Situated between Skipton and Settle is Martins Bank’s Hellifield sub-Branch. Mentioned in the Domesday Book, and once an important railway junction, nowadays the village suffers somewhat from having the main A65 road cutting straight through its centre – having such a connection with the outside world is only useful when visitors actually stop and buy something, whilst an excess of visitors is undesireable - a dilemma that faces many such towns and villages in this beautiful part of Craven country. Between them, Skipton and Settle have six sub branches. These offices tend to “fit in” with their surroundings, and Hellifield is no exception, with its modest shop front in the window of an ordinary terraced house.

Although Hellifield only opens for five and a half hours each week under Martins Bank, it survives the merger with Barclays and goes on to serve local customers for a further thirty one years. It is sad to note that in the twenty first century very few of these tiny offices are left…
