By 1963 Martins has begun an ambitious programme of providing branches to workplaces and other specialist targets for expansion, right across England and Wales. This ranges from several new sub branches at Universities, to a hospital, the NORGAS site in Newcastle, two RAF Stations, and that staple of agricultural banking, the Auction Mart or Cattle Market Branches. Thus we move into Marsh Barton, to provide the Cattle Market with a service each Friday for four hours. The branch is controlled by our main branch at Exeter. As with so many of the newer additions to our portfolio, Exeter has to fall on it sword when we merge with Barclays, who have to take a long hard economic and practical look at their newly enlarged bank, and make cuts where prudent to do so…
