Martins Bank 1928+

Whilst Martins Bank’s Branch at Leeds University does not survive the merger with Barclays, it does enjoy at least the best part of a decade, serving students.  The Bank issues leaflets for students at nearly all universities in England, and when a specific university branch of the bank is not on site, students are directed to nearby branches of the Bank.  Here, they can benefit from the friendly service and advice, that has been a hallmark of Martins Bank’s’ offering to students since Liverpool University Branch was first opened in 1958.

In Service: 1960 until 12 December 1969

We know that Martins Staff like to tread the boards, and sing for their supper (see SONG AND DANCE) but it seems Martins Bank and broadcasting might also go hand in hand, as Leeds University Branch is not far from the BBC in Woodhouse Lane.  BRISTOL CLIFTON Branch is also close to the BBC Western Region studios. MANCHESTER HULME Branch is a stone’s throw from the Hulme Hipperdrome where some of the most iconic Radio Shows of the 40s 50s and 60s were made, and one Manager at Cardiff is no stranger to making radio and TV appearances both in English AND Welsh!

The Staff of Martins Bank is, of course multi-talented, so in 1965, it comes as no surprise to find that Mr D Greaves, who is Clerk in Charge at Leeds University Branch, is the focus of attention in Martins Bank Magazine when his achievements in the RAF voluntary reserve are recognised…
