Martins Bank 1928+

Martins Bank’s first branch at Liverpool University opens in 1957 at 164 BROWNLOW HILL.  This is also the Bank’s first foray into the world of student banking, which is a banking first, and also a phenomenon that snowballs reaching a peak in the 1990s.

At this point, some thirty years since the idea of student branches was pioneered by Martins Bank, British Banks with representation at UK University sites can expect to open up to and sometimes well over 1000 student accounts in the first two weeks of term. Students are showered with welcome gifts, and the work begins to find those who are good with their money and serious about becoming high earners when they graduate. A little like panning for gold, the 1990s “student rush” was not for the faint hearted, with twelve hour days common at University branches each October.  In the 1960s however, things are not yet quite so frenetic, and in 1965, Liverpool’s Brownlow Hill area is set for redevelopment. It is time for Martins to leave its original premises, and take temporary refuge in a wooden hut at 45 Bedford Street North.  If you were a student at Liverpool University at this time and by any remote chance took a picture of your friends that might have this temporary Branch in the background, we’d love to hear from you!  To send images and memories about this, or any of Martins Bank’s branches, please do get in touch with us at the usual address, martinsbankarchive@btinternet.com.  Following extensive building work, Brownlow Hill is redeveloped, and Martins moves into a brand new branch at ALSOP BUILDING Brownlow Hill, from where - until 29 January 2021 - student banking was dispensed for more than fifty-five years …
