Martins Bank 1928+

We are still in search of ‘gold dust’ – that is, a photograph of 114 Fenchurch Street in its Martins days.  Sad to say that although Barclays served customers from this very address until 2016, the original building was replaced many moons ago by concrete and glass, which means we can’t even take a picture of it now.  Barclays closes its Branch at Fenchurch Street Station early in 1970, in favour of the Martins Building in which it sees a great deal of potential, as sometime between 1972 and 1976 it is demolished and rebuilt…

In Service: 15 July 1937 until 2 September 2016

During this mammoth building task, the business moves temporarily to 23 Lime Street, and the fuss is definitely worth it – the new building will stand the test of time, with Barclays operating there until September 2016 when it moved several numbers up the road to 100 Fenchurch Street.  Martins Bank’s first Branch at Fenchurch Street was opened in 1937 in temporary premises at No 22 FENCHURCH STREET, before moving the following year to Nos 112/114.  It was opened and Managed for the first three years by Mr E H Denman who became Joint General Manager of Martins Bank early in 1949.  For our feature, we have just one retirement write-up from Martins Bank Magazine. It concerns Mr Bill Odell, who retires from the Managership of Fenchurch Street in 1967 after eleven years in the job, and forty-three in the Bank…

1967 04 MBM.jpg1956 to 1967 Mr A J Odell Manager MBM-Wi67P55.jpgA considerable number of friends gathered in the canteen at 68 Lombard Street on October 27 to wish Bill Odell good health and a long and happy retirement. Of his 43 years' service Mr Odell spent nearly 30 years at Lombard Street, four with H.M. Forces and the remainder at Fenchurch Street where he was appointed Pro Manager in 1956. He was well known to many of the London District as Chairman of the London District Staff Association and of the Cicala Players, Secretary of the Cicala Luncheon Club and a member of the London District Dinner Committee. The proceedings were very informal, apart from a few words of good wishes and a welcome to Mrs Odell. Mr Odell was presented with a book of signatures and a cheque and Mrs Odell with a box of chocolates, the convivial tone of the evening being a compliment to Mr Odell and his wife.
