Wallsend is about four miles north east of Newcastle upon Tyne and is unfortunately blotted out on our map by large capital letters! The branch comes to us from the North Eastern Banking Company Limited, which merges with the Bank of Liverpool in 1914. Wallsend is a full branch, with a sub branch at WALKER. At the time of the merger with Barclays, Wallsend is open for the full six day banking week. Our feature concerns the retirment celebrations of Mr A E Nichol, Manager of the branch for ten years, who retires after a phenominal forty-three years with the bank in 1961…
To celebrate the occasion of the retirement of Mr. A. E. Nichol after over 43 years' service, a function was held at the Crown Hotel, Newcastle upon Tyne, which was attended by over 100 colleagues, including Mr. W. Weatherill, the North Eastern District General Manager. Mr. L. J. Walton had paid his own tribute earlier, before he left for London to take up his new appointment. Mr. J. M. Dobson, second in command at Wallsend, acted as Master of Ceremonies and mentioned in his speech that Mr. Nichol had served at Tyne Dock, Felling, Sunderland, Gallowgate, Newcastle City Office, Quayside and on the North Eastern District General Manager's staff before his first appointment as Pro Manager at Northumberland Street in 1950. He was appointed Manager at Wallsend in 1951. Mr. Dobson made mention of Mr. Nichol's many interests, including Rotary, the Wallsend Youth Club, the Royal National Life-boat Institution and hospital visiting. Mr. Weatherill then spoke warmly of the esteem in which Albert is held in the Wallsend area and presented him on behalf of the subscribers with a cine projector. Miss V. Cook (Wallsend), presented Mrs. Nichol with a bouquet after which there was a cocktail party to round off a very pleasant and happy occasion, fully indicative of the high regard which everyone has for Mr. Nichol.
