“The Appointed Day” has arrived… Throughout 1969, Martins Head Office issues the infamous “Pink Integration Circulars” which provide instructions to the managers and staff of branches. Integration is always referred to as taking place “on the appointed day” which agreed by special act of Parliament is 15 December 1969. With so much to integrate with Barclays, no less than 85 very detailed circulars are issued between February 1969 and January 1970. At one point, the workload is considered to be too great for branches to be able reasonably to cope with, and the final batch of circulars is intentionally deferred to allow pause for breath.
As well as comparing procedure and trying to implement the best solution, much greater headaches are caused by the amalgamation of internal accounts, not to mention the accounts held by Martins Customers. Almost overnight, Martins staff will have be able to offer the same Barclaycard service to customers as Barclays, and Managers are sent in quick rotation on training seminars. Barclaycard staff themselves visit Martins branches to try and offer reassurance… The countdown has begun, and all over England and Wales, Martins clerks are busy throwing away obsolete papers, stocking up on new ones, learning new procedures, and STILL going to extremes to be helpful. Here, we show just what a busy year it is for Martins, as we interlace details of the integration circulars, with the regular official and social activities of the bank and its staff…
