The work of Martins Bank trustee
Department is very much “behind the scenes”, until this eye-catching
advertisement comes along in 1966. On more than one occasion we have been
asked to feature Trustee Department as part of the Online Archive. As ever, we are pleased to oblige only to
discover that the workings of the various Trustee Departments up and down the
land is not covered in any greatdetail in Martins Bank Magazine. As a belated gesture a small feature
is started in 1968 : “Trust Company News”, but this consists mainly of
write-ups of sports and other events involving Trust Company staff. The Trustee and Investment Departments,
which become Martins Bank Trust Company also gives Barclays its biggest prize
– from which the rewards are still felt today – in the form of Martins
Unicorn Unit Trusts. Some say that
this alone is worth taking over Martins for. |

Examination success In
the examinations following the 1968 Gilbart lectures on banking Miss E. B. Goulstine, ll.b. (London (City) Trustee)
achieved a class I certificate of honour. Cricket and netball with the
solicitors A
team drawn from the Company's North Eastern offices met one from the staff of
Messrs Dickinson, Miller & Turnbull, the Newcastle solicitors. In
the twenty overs to which each team was limited the solicitors accumulated
52 runs for eight wickets. W. Barren, bowling into a stiff breeze, was in
devastating form, taking seven wickets for 15 runs and clean bowling five of
his victims. B.
O'Hara and M. F. Whittaker made a big, if leisurely, stand for the Company
scoring 25 and 20 runs respectively. With one over to spare the winning score
was reached for the loss of seven wickets. * * * * * * Following
the Company's success at cricket the ladies from the Newcastle offices
produced a netball team to challenge a ladies' team from Messrs Dickinson,
Miller & Turnbull. On
this occasion the ladies were unable to repeat their colleagues' success,
losing 1—4. Cricket at Liverpool At
the L.C.P.T.'s ground, Finch Lane, Liverpool, teams from the Company's
Liverpool offices and from the staff of Liverpool Overseas branch met on July
17 and again on July 23. In
the first match notable performances from J. R. Lythgoe (37) and D. Massey
(32) took the Company's innings to 96 for 5 in the allotted twenty overs.
Overseas replied with 84 for 5. In
the second game the Company's batsmen were sadly out of form, achieving a
meagre 63 all out. The Overseas reply, in which J. H. Murray distinguished
himself, was 65 for 7 in nineteen overs. |
