				Whenever Martins Bank Magazine goes out to visit branches and meet the staff, they like to refer to making “visits to the family”. Whilst this might at first seem parochial or even condecending, we have heard from a number of colleagues in the North East that they in particular feel part of a large and caring “local family”. Barclays is thin on the ground here, and the largest number of Martins Branches are located in the North Eastern counties of England. One former Martins Manager tells us that in Newcastle at least, it is the case that Martins has taken over Barclays! The setting for North Eastern District Office, is 22 Grey street, Newcastle upon Tyne – formerly the Head Office of the north eastern Banking company Limited. Like so many of Martins’ District offices that were once head offices of other banks, the building is grand and imposing. Future computerisation and the removal of back office jobs will however spell the end for such large premises.
