Martins Bank’s original Branch in Haslingden is opened in 1881 by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank, on the corner of REGENT STREET and Blackburn Road.  By 1937 the Bank needs more space and so a building is chosen at 34 Deardengate.  Our friends at Barclays Group Archives tell us that the minutes of the premises committee refer to a short period of closure in April 1939, to allow for some alterations to be made.

For our Haslingden feature, we go back to November 1953, and the retirement of Mr J Kay who at that point has been Manager at Haslingden for some seventeen years of his amazingly long forty-eight-year career…

1954 01 MBM.jpg1936 to 1954 Mr J Kay Manager MBM-Sp54P54.jpgOn November 30th, Mr. J. Kay retired from the position of Manager at Haslingden branch which he has held since 1936. He entered the service of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank in 1916, was Assistant Cashier at Waterfoot in 1923, and received his first appointment, as Pro Manager at Rawtenstall, in 1934. On the last day of November, past and present members of the staff were entertained to tea by Mr. and Mrs. Kay, and Mr. J. Whittaker, the new Manager at Haslingden, presented a portable radio set to Mr. Kay, while Mrs. Kay received a bouquet of carnations from the lady members of the staff. In making the presentation, Mr. Whittaker spoke appreciatively of Mr. Kay's popularity, and, on behalf of his many friends, wished him a long and happy retirement.

Mr. H. M. Isherwood conveyed the good wishes of Manchester District Office, and spoke of his own happy association with Mr. Kay over a number of years. His sentiments were endorsed by those present, among them Mr. Spencer and Mr. Bremner of Blackburn branch and Mr. Maden of Bacup branch. Mr. Kay has been a member of the Manchester District Committee of the Staff Association for a number of years, and received a token of appreciation of his service with them in the form of a Waterman propelling pencil.
