


More than anything else, the new Branch at Alderley
Edge is a product of Martins Bank’s
mid-60s burst of confidence, when the Bank opens more and more outlets -
usually sub-Branches - either in response to the physical movement of a
town’s economic centre, or in order to beat their rivals to being amongst the
first banks to trade in a particular setting.
Although Martins does not know it at the time, most of these new
branches will very soon have their fate sealed by an agreement to merge with
Barclays, who must compare branches in areas of duplication and keep only
those that can be run economically.

Thus, Alderley Edge has a very short life as a sub branch to Wilmslow,
being open for less than three years, and not seeing the 1970s at all.
Luckily, we can still take a look at this branch, thanks to the images on
this page which once again have been preserved by Barclays…
