 Amongst the large stock of
Manchester branches that comes to Martins Bank through the amalgamation of
the Bank of Liverpool and Martins with the Lancashire and Yorkshire bank in
1928, are offices at both Manchester Corn Exchange, AND
  Manchester Exchange.  Exchange does not
last very long at all as a Martins branch, and is closed in 1929. This is the
fate of a number of Branches at this time, as is part of the new Bank’s first
consolidation of the Branch network.   |

The Corn Exchange Branch however, occupies a prominent position on the corner of Corporation Street and would most likely have remained a key branch in the City if it hadn’t been for the Manchester Blitz which destroyed it at Christmas 1940. Although not shown as a sub-Branch, Manchester Exchange Branch is listed in Martins Bank’s Annual Report and Accounts for 1928 under the control of Mr F B Cocker, who is Manager of Miles Platting Branch, and another sub-Branch at Moston. We are fortunate have a number of Exchange Branch staff photos in the gallery below. If you can help with information or images of this or indeed any of Martins Banks 980+ Branch buildings, please do get in touch with us at the usual address – martinsbankarchive@btinternet.com.
