Martins Bank’s premises at 22 Grey Street are the former Head Office of the North Eastern Banking Company Limited, and house both NORTH EASTERN DISTRICT OFFICE, and City Office Branch. Whilst there are no internal images of the counter area within this building, there is one photograph in Barclays’ collection, which shows part of North Eastern District Office, and this can be seen below.

Many of the Bank’s larger city centre branches are known to those who work there as “City Office”. They offer the services of a branch, but they are, with the exception of Bristol City Office, housed in the same building as one of Martins’ District Offices. Customers can therefore benefit from the local decision-making powers of the District Office, and do their everyday banking, all in the same place.

The size and grandeur of Newcastle City Office could be said to be commensurate with the North Eastern District itself, which boasts the largest number of Martins Branches within its borders. We were delighted to receive from Barclays, another exterior image of this imposing Building, this time with its North Eastern Bank signage:
