How genteel it all seems, an
ivy clad branch of Martins Bank in the appropriately named Ivy House, next
door to the Café Royal – this isn’t the Home Counties however, but Stokesley,
  Middlesbrough.  Opened in the 1920s,
this Branch oozes charm and character, and really makes a fine ambassador for
“God’s own Country” (or Yorkshire, as it is more commonly known).   Stokesley operates a sub branch three days
a week at HUTTON RUDBY, which lasts until April 2000, but sadly Stokesley
itself is a victim of the Barclays merger, and is closed in 1970. |
 In Service: 9 November 1922 until 25 September 1970

  Ref 0030-2800 Thankfully
Martins took these interior photographs, and we can see that inside the
Branch, the obligatory black and white floor tiles that greet customers to
Ivy House indicate the completion of a much awaited 1960s refit.  As for the psychedelic anaglypta wallpaper,
this may best be viewed through very dark glasses, or not at all. At least
the office seems to be a little calmer, although the mind-boggling patterning
seems also to have found its way onto the ceiling…
